Street Photography Ethics
How to photograph people respectfully in public spaces.
The Golden Rule
Treat your subjects the way you'd want to be treated. If someone doesn't want their photo taken, respect that. Period.
Legal vs Ethical
In most countries, photographing people in public spaces is legal. But legality doesn't equal ethics. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
When NOT to Shoot
- Someone in distress or vulnerable situation
- Children without parental consent
- People who clearly don't want to be photographed
- Situations that could embarrass or harm the subject
Tips for Respectful Shooting
- Be discreet: Don't make people uncomfortable
- Smile: If someone notices you, smile and nod
- Ask permission: If someone confronts you, be honest
- Delete if asked: If someone asks you to delete their photo, do it
- Don't exploit: Poverty, suffering, and disability aren't your content
