How to Shoot Street Photography in Low Light

The streets come alive at night. Here's how to capture them.

Why Shoot in Low Light?

The best street photography often happens when the light is low — early morning, late evening, night. Shadows are deeper, contrasts are stronger, and the mood is more intense. For Are-Bure-Boke photographers, low light is a gift.

Camera Settings

  • ISO: 1600-6400 (film), 3200-12800 (digital)
  • Shutter: 1/30s or slower
  • Aperture: f/1.4-f/2.8
  • Focus: Manual or zone focusing

Techniques

  • Embrace the grain: High ISO creates grain — that's the Are-Bure-Boke aesthetic
  • Use available light: Street lamps, neon signs, car headlights
  • Shoot from the hip: In low light, you can't see through the viewfinder anyway
  • Move with your subject: Pan blur creates energy

Film vs Digital at Night

Film: Push Tri-X to 1600 or 3200. The grain will be heavy, but that's the look. Digital: Shoot RAW and convert to black and white in post. Add grain in Lightroom.

Safety Tips

Shooting at night requires extra awareness. Stay in well-lit areas. Be aware of your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave.
